GATE

How to begin preparing for your child applying to college

The powerpoint by Monique Young was presented at the GATE Secondary Parent Meeting on November 7. 2011 . The Chasing College Acceptance was a powerpoint that was to be presented by Claudia Morales but she was unable to attend at the last minute.  Both powerpoints provide very useful information for parents.

Gifted and Talented Identification

San Jose Unified screens all 2nd graders in the spring for identification as Gifted and Talented.  Students who score in the 98th percentile or above on the Raven Progressive Matrices Plus (RPM+) are eligible for consideration.  Teachers of these students are asked to complete a checklist of observable behaviors.  Following the completion of these two steps, a meeting is held to certify the student’s eligibility.  Parents are then notified of their student’s identification as Gifted and Talented.

GATE Services

The teacher provides GATE services in the regular classroom.  Teachers have received training in Direct Instruction where they do flexible grouping as part of the lesson.  It is during this time that GATE students can be asked to go deeper into the subject matter being studied.

Parent Meetings

Two meetings for GATE parents are held each year. One is specifically for Secondary parents with students in middle and high school.  This year’s meeting will be on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.  at the District Office.
