Classified Application and Test Requirements

Basic Information:

1. Classified job vacancies are posted at all San Jose Unified School District schools and offices, in the Human Resources Office, and on the district website (http://www.sjusd.org). Some vacancies are also posted on EdJoin.

2. Classified job vacancies are posted several times throughout the month.

3. Applications are accepted only when a position is currently open.

Procedure:

a. Follow the directions on the Announcement of Classified Vacancies to apply. Note any requirements, especially required tests. Tests must be passed prior to applying. For testing information and schedule, visit our website: www.sjusd.org > Jobs, current openings > classified employment testing.

b. Complete a Classified Employment Application for each position in which you are interested.

c. Submit only signed, original, hardcopy applications to the Human Resources Department; open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM –5:00 PM. Include official proof of education.

4. All new employees, whether permanent or non-regular/short-term (including substitutes),must be processed through Human Resources before beginning work.

a. I-9 Immigration & Control Act of 1986:
Before an applicant can work he/she must produce Original Documents to prove that he/she is authorized to work in the United States.” A list of acceptable documents of proof is available from Human Resources.

b. Fingerprinting, Tuberculosis Testing, Employment Packet:
All new employees must be fingerprinted and be cleared by the Department of Justice (for background check of criminal convictions), tested for TB, and complete an employment packet prior to work.

Specific Position Information:

1. Clerical Positions:  (Type, use computer, answer phones, greet public, etc.)
All requirements stated on the job description for a permanent position must be met. (See additional substitute information below in #6). Tests are given regularly by Human Resources. (See Classified Employment Testing and Schedule.)

2. Instructional Associates Positions:  (Work with children/teachers)
Before applying for a permanent position, you must pass the Instructional Associate Test which meets the No Child Left Behind requirements set by the federal government. This test has three parts: Basic English Language Skills, Mathematics, and the Ability to Assist. All requirements stated on the job description for a permanent position must be met.

3. Bilingual Positions:  (Clerical or Instructional Related, 2.5%-5% additional salary.)
Before applying for a position requiring bilingual skills, the specific language assessment test must be passed to receive 2.5% additional salary.
Additional requirements must be met for the bi-literate 2.5% additional salary.

4. Custodial Services:  (Custodians / Groundskeepers)
Before applying for a permanent position, you must meet the requirements stated on the job description and announcement. Tests are given regularly by Human Resources. (See Classified Employment Testing and Schedule.)

Short-Term laborers are used by the Custodial Services Department as needed and are paid by the hour. Contact Custodial Services Department at 535-6166, to see if there are any openings.

5. Food Services:
The Food Services Department gives a basic skills quiz to prospective applicants for substitute positions. Contact the Food Services Department at 535-6021 to take this quiz. Passing the quiz enables a person to become a substitute. However, before applying for a permanent position, you must also pass the Food Services Promotional Test given by the Human Resources Department, and meet all other requirements stated on the job description and announcement.

6. Substitute Information:
There is a continuous need for substitutes (short-term and “on-call” employees) in all areas. All substitutes are paid from time sheets signed by
the employee and submitted to the Payroll Department. Payday is the 10th day of the following month.
Substitute pay rates: Clerical, $12.58/hr; Instructional Associate, $11.98/hr; Short-term Labor, $13.90/hr; and Food Service, $11.15/hr. Substitutes should update their current availability (especially after being released from a long term assignment) by calling Human Resources at 535-6549.
